Møt Halima
Denne historien slutter sannsynligvis ikke slik du kanskje tror. Den starter i Somalia, et land herjet av en tørke som har fått over 1 million mennesker til å forlate hjemmene sine. Halima og familien hennes var blant dem.
Halima kjempet en kamp mot den nådeløse solen for å finne nok vann til familien. Etter hvert måtte hun ta noen valg.
Til tross for at de produserer mesteparten av verdens mat har småskalabønder en tendens til å selv leve i matusikkerhet. På verdensbasis utgjør de flertallet av alle som lever i fattigdom. Å bidra til å øke inntektene til småskalabønder og styrke livsgrunnlaget deres er avgjørende for å bygge bærekraftige matsystemer, øke matsikkerheten og oppnå målet om null sult.
FNs World Food Programme (WFP) er den ledende humanitære organisasjonen som redder og forandrer liv, leverer matassistanse i katastrofesituasjoner, og arbeider med lokalsamfunn for å forbedre ernæring og bygge motstandskraft.
En stor del av Assams befolkning er avhengig av jordbruk, noe som gjør dem svært sårbare for konsekvensene av klimaendringer. Prosjektet skal utstyre småbønder i delstaten med innovative og klimatilpassede jordbruksteknikker og strategier for diversifisering og utvidelse av livsgrunnlaget.
I noen av områdene WFP jobber er lokale tjenester og mat tilgjengelig, men befolkningen mangler likevel de økonomiske ressursene til å kjøpe dem. En kontantoverføring er penger gitt til sårbare mennesker slik at de kan kjøpe det de trenger fra lokalmarkedet. I 2019 overførte WFP rekordhøye 18 milliarder NOK (US$2.1 billion) kjøpekraft til nesten 28 millioner mennesker i 64 land.
Klokken er ikke engang tolv i Satara, en avsidesliggende landsby i Nigers sørvestlige Tillaberi-region, og gradestokken nærmer seg allerede 40 grader. Den asfalterte veien til landsbyen er humpete og sandete.
McCain, som siden 2021 har vært USAs ambassadør til FNs tre mat- og landbruksorganisasjoner i Roma, overtar ledelsen av en organisasjon som i fjor leverte matvarehjelp til rekordhøye 158 millioner mennesker over hele verden.
"Det er bare en måte å beskrive det jeg så på: apokalyptisk. Hele nabolag er jevnet med jorden, hjem er ødelagt, skoler og butikker er stengt, liv er revet i stykker. Omfanget av ødeleggelsene her er virkelig ubegripelig", sa direktør David Beasley i FNs World Food Programme (WFP) etter å ha besøkt den jordskjelvrammede regionen Hatay i det sørlige Tyrkia 25.
