Mer enn en tredjedel av Syrias befolkning er internt fordrevet da mennesker foretar desperate forsøk på å finne sikkerhet. Med denne kontinuerlige fordrivingen følger det alarmerende høye nivåer av sult og behov.
I fjor stod verden ovenfor en enestående situasjon der det var fare for hungersnød i fire forskjellige områder samtidig, hvorav to var i Øst-Afrika. I februar 2017 ble det erklært hungersnød i deler av Sør-Sudan da 100 000 mennesker stod ovenfor sult, og ytterlige 1 million var i faresonen.
Tiår av krig før løsrivelse fra Sudan, samt en ødeleggende fem-års borgerkrig etter selvstendighet, har satt en stopper for Sør-Sudans vekst og dermed forhindret infrastrukturutvikling.
Verdens yngste nasjon forblir en av verdens fattigste og minst utviklede land.
1. Sahel er et tørt landområde sør for Sahara som strekker seg på tvers av Afrika, fra Senegal i vest til Djibouti i øst. Området er mottakelig for tørke samt mat- og ernæringskriser som er koblet til klimasjokk og underutvikling. I løpet av store tørkeperioder, flammer humanitære behov opp.
